Preparing for Labor
Giving birth is an empowering experience, and part of the reason why labor is, well, hard work. While we’d be glossing over the truth to say that you won’t be pushed beyond what you ever thought was possible, there are ways to prepare for labor that can help you feel more calm, in control, and go into the experience knowing what to expect.Create a Personalized Birth Plan
One of the best ways to prepare for labor is by creating a personalized birth plan. A birth plan is basically a document for your doctors, midwives, doulas, and partner that outlines your preferences and desires for your labor. Some of the things to consider for your birth plan include the following:- Preferences for labor and delivery (e.g. do you want to have a natural childbirth)
- Pain management
- Who should be in the room with you
- Aesthetic preferences such as music, lighting, etc.
- If you’re having a home birth, include a contingency plan on where to go should you need to transfer to a medical facility (though your midwives should have this planned out as well).
- Any concerns or preferences should complications arise during birth.
