Intimacy. During pregnancy. Sex. Yep, we’re talking about being intimate during pregnancy.
Growing a little one inside of you is one of the most amazing gifts you can experience. You feel your baby wiggling inside you, and sometimes those wiggles are not so pleasant. In those moments (or days… okay, weeks) of discomfort, being intimate is the last thing on your mind. For some moms-to-be, feelings of intimacy don’t ever flee, while others have difficulty regaining sexual desire. We know how it is moms— those first and second trimesters often bring feelings that are anything but sexy; however, your third trimester, well… that’s a different story.
Staying healthy during pregnancy goes beyond eating well and staying hydrated. While physical health carries the utmost importance, your mental and emotional well-being play a major role in the health of your pregnancy. Let’s talk about intimacy. We often hear that word and immediately think of sex. But, really, intimacy is more than that. It’s about connecting with someone you love; laughing, sharing meaningful dialogue, and being physically connected all play a part in the bond between you and your significant other.
Often, moms and dads to-be miss being intimate, but the concern of whether or not baby is safe during times of intimacy often postpone being sexual at all. As it turns out, baby is extremely protected by a soft cushion of fluids in the womb, and won’t have a clue what mommy and daddy are up to. In fact, sex during pregnancy is perfectly normal, and even encouraged!
Being physically intimate reduces stress levels, improves blood circulation, and even lowers blood pressure—all things that preggo moms need to maintain. Intimacy releases a chemical in the brain called Oxytocin, which helps reduce feelings of anxiety and tension. If that wasn’t exciting enough, get this— the female orgasm strengthens the muscles you’ll use during labor! How? It causes your pelvic floor to contract, thus exercising those muscles—a great perk, if you ask us!
So we say this— if you’re in the mood, why shouldn’t you go for it? I mean, after all, you’re pregnant—not deadly, and having sex won’t kill you. Enjoy this time, embrace your partner, and remember— bringing a new life into the world is exciting, and it’s perfectly okay to be intimate.
